Taking steps to mitigate the risks of fraud against a bank and its customers makes good business sense, and anti-fraud initiatives long pre-date our modern regulatory notions including prescriptive roles for compliance, risk and audit in a lines of defense model. Yet fraudsters continue to innovate and pose a threat that challenges us all.

James Freis, Jr. (Jim) played a public role in combatting fraud exposed through the Global Financial Crisis while serving as Director of FinCEN at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He subsequently served as Chief Compliance Officer at the Deutsche Börse Group’s financial market infrastructures, and in 2020 upon joining the global fintech payment processor Wirecard based in Germany, promptly helped expose that country’s largest modern financial fraud. Jim will share some perspectives from these and other experiences in working with Audit and Compliance.
